I can’t believe I have lived in North Carolina for six years and have never visited Asheville (or Highlands or the Outer Banks – but who’s counting). Well that all changed a couple weeks ago when Jeremy and I hopped into a 2017 Toyota RAV4 and hit the road to the mountains. Asheville is under an hour away from Spartanburg (where Jeremy lives), but the RAV4 was so fun to drive, it wouldn’t have mattered if it took longer! Seriously, it features Dynamic Cruise Control which senses a car in front of you and slows you down – I can’t believe this technology exists now!
We only had 24 Hours to see everything we wanted to see in Asheville so the trip was a bit of a whirlwind. We arrived and went straight to our hotel, the Omni Grove Park Inn. Talk about stunning! Especially right before Christmas. There were decorated Christmas trees throughout the property, waterfalls, huge fireplaces with rocking chairs in front, as well as a gingerbread house competition. My favorite was the real life gingerbread house in the lobby where you could order hot chocolates.
After relaxing in our room, we climbed back in the Toyota RAV4 and headed to see Candlelight Christmas Evenings at the Biltmore House, all along the way playing Christmas music uninterrupted by commercials thanks to the satellite radio. The house was gorgeous with each room decorated beautifully for the season and carolers in the main living room. Be sure to wear comfy shoes when visiting though, you’ll be going up and down quite a few staircases.
The next day we packed our things into the RAV4. Thank goodness this SUV has so much space because truth be told, I am quite the overpacker – blogger probs. It was nice having a spacious trunk, Jeremy and I both drive trucks so we aren’t used to it. Then we headed straight to breakfast at Biscuit Head. This place was so popular there was a line out the door! But totally worth it, as was every calorie! We took a quick drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway and stopped at a couple scenic overlooks before popping back over to the Biltmore House for grounds tour (a second day is included in your ticket!) I snagged a couple of presents for Christmas before we finally had to head back to reality.
My only complaint (as is with every trip) is that it didn’t last longer. Asheville was beautiful and I see us heading back soon, in either the Spring or Fall. It was the cherry on top to get to drive around this Toyota RAV4 while we were there. I am a long-time lover of Toyota, working on Toyota teams in NASCAR for the last 5 years. Like I mentioned earlier, but surprisingly to most people, I actually drive a Tacoma! I call it my little Tonka truck 😉 Regardless, I was excited to give the RAV4 a spin, especially one that was fully loaded… definitely gave me that sneaky little new car bug.
