We’ve hit Day 5 of snow on the ground in South Carolina, which is seriously hard to believe. We typically get one snow day in late January and it melts by the next day, but Winter Storm Diego has some serious staying power! Jeremy and I lost cable and internet for a day, but luckily, kept power throughout the storm. And while it was (obviously) chilly enough outside for snow and freezing rain, it wasn’t windy or uncomfortable and we spent a ton of time outside enjoying how pretty it was. So I wanted to round up my recent looks to share for a little bit of holiday inspiration. Almost everything I’m wearing is under $50!
How many eyeshadow palettes is too many? The limit does not exist. 2018 was a record-breaking year for cosmetics companies. There were an insane amount of launches; so much so that it was difficult to keep up and impossible to try them all. Which is exciting and overwhelming all rolled into one for makeup lovers. Even drugstore companies significantly upped their game, many of their products surpassing prestige brands.
2018 was also the year that I fell in love with makeup. I had always enjoyed getting dolled up, but typically stuck to daytime and a nighttime staple looks. Recently though, I have begun experimenting with my looks, trying new products, and honing my skills (if you will). As influencers, we’re blessed to receive products in PR to try and additionally I scour stores and the internet to save y’all time and money.
I hope to take this passion one step further in 2019 by beginning a YouTube channel and sharing tutorials, favorites, reviews, and more! But until I muster the courage, I had to share my favorite, most-used, worth-every-penny palettes of 2018!
Let’s start with the priciest palette of the bunch. I’d been on the hunt for the perfect pinky nude palette that doesn’t have just warm tones and this is it. If you are a lover of blush-toned looks, Huda formulated your dream shades! What’s unique about this this palette is that it features a cream concealer base to prime your eyes or to cut your crease, plus 10 highly-pigmented matte shades, four shimmering pearl reflective shades, two glitters, and a pressed pearl. These shimmers are so unique; the pressed pearl formulation is like nothing I’ve seen before and worth the hefty price tag.
I had heard amazing things about this BH Cosmetics’ Zodiac for months, but the layout of the palette always had me on the fence for some reason. I honestly have no idea why because in person, it’s seriously stunning! So when Ulta marked it down 40% for Cyber Monday, I pulled the trigger. And thank goodness I did! The mattes are smooth and versatile featuring both warm and cool tone shades, but the real stars are the SHIMMERS. They are like butter. I don’t know what BH Cosmetics did, but they were able to achieve the brightest and most pigmented shimmers I have found in both prestige or drugstore cosmetics brands. (Scroll down to see an arm full of shimmer swatches) I am currently trying to hold myself back from scooping up the new Zodiac Palette Love Signs… because c’mon, I only have two eyelids, but those warm tones are calling my name!
P.S. This is the palette I used to achieve the red sweater look above! I simply blended the soft brown shade into the outer V and crease and then applied the center shimmer all over the lid!
This is the least expensive palette of the list, but had every shade I was missing from my arsenal. I was in the market for colorful shades to do bolder looks; nothing crazy, just some reds, yellows, purples, and deep greens. I am such a fan of rich, jewel-toned looks no matter the season and that is what Extra Spice is all about. If you are a lover of warm shades and can’t get enough of the Fall color scheme, I guarantee this will be a favorite. The only drawback is that some of the shimmers aren’t as blinding as I would like, but this can be counteracted with some Mac Fix+ or NYX’s glitter glue.
P.S. This is the palette I used to achieve the look above. I laid yellow in the inner corner, blended into orange, then into red and deep plum. I even added a bit of forest green to deepen the outer corners.
If you are looking for the PERFECT every day palette, THIS. IS. IT. The colors are so pigmented and blendable, the fallout is next to nothing, and the shimmers are stunning (hello, Jaybird!) It’s quickly become the only palette I travel with because of how easy it is to achieve so many different wearable looks. If I haven’t sold you enough yet, the pan sizes are huge. If you purchase one palette on this list, make it this one. It’s my favorite and I can’t rave enough about it!
Now this didn’t launch in 2018, but I purchased it this year and it’s quickly become a ride-or-die, so of course I had to mention it. Jaclyn Hill spent two years formulating the highest quality shades with Morphe and it really shows. As a long-time lover of Morphe, I can honestly see a huge difference in the quality of these shades compared to their typical ones. The 35 shades include mattes, shimmers, satins, foils, and glitter and all are beautifully pigmented and blendable. The large size may seem inconvenient but for if you’re someone who loves makeup, it’s great to have everything you need for endless looks in one palette. Plus, the $38 price tag is tough to beat.
Happy December, y’all! Can you believe it’s here? I mean, no pressure y’all… there are only a handful of weeks left to wrap up that Christmas list! And if you’re like me, your Netflix que is filled with Christmas movies. Honestly, after a week in bed thanks to a nasty cold, I’d like to consider myself an expert on the genre now. I mean, what’s not to love about these poorly-acted cheese fests? And while I’m typically a horror movie junkie, when December rolls around, it’s Hallmark and Netflix on repeat. So I thought I’d round up some of the most adorable Christmas movies that are currently streaming!
Top 10 Netflix Christmas Movies
The Princess Switch
Let’s start with one of Netflix’s most recent releases starring Vanessa Hudgens (who kills it with the British accent). Pastry shop owner Stacy decides on a whim to go to the small Kingdom of Belgravia with her coworker Kevin to compete in an international baking competition. While cleaning her apron, she bumps into the secretive Lady Margaret Delacourt, Duchess of Montenaro and future bride of Edward, the kingdom’s Crown Prince, only to discover that they look identical. Lady Margaret hatches a plan to switch places with Stacy for a few days to learn more about the people she will be reigning over. And it would have worked if the Prince went out of town as originally planned, but he winds up spending much more time with Stacy than either could have predicted.
Christmas with a View
Restaurant manager, Clara’s world is turned upside down when a handsome reality star chef joins the staff for the holiday season. While he has a playboy reputation, he’s actually come to the ski resort town for an unexpected reason. His dreams intersect with Clara’s in the most adorable way culminating in a satisfying ending. Christmas with a View is one of my favorites and I highly recommend it. Not to mention that the lead is quite easy on the eyes! Ow ow!
A Christmas Prince
An aspiring journalist Amber gets the opportunity of a lifetime to fly to the small country of Aldovia to cover a press conference of the scandalous crown prince Richard. When Richard fails to show, Amber sneaks around the palace in search of a story that could catapult her career. When she is mistaken as the young princess’ tutor, she decides to play along in order to further investigate. But she winds up getting far more than she bargained for getting that close to the royal family. Without spoiling anything, this movie has every element you’d look for in a romantic Christmas movie and is definitely one to watch.
Struggling fashion designer Georgia decides to attend her high school reunion in order to win back her quarterback jock ex-boyfriend (aptly named Craig). Though she dumped him for cheating on her at prom – with her friend no less – Georgia believes that if one piece of her life falls into place, the rest will follow. At the reunion, she finds that he hasn’t changed a bit. And neither has her starving artist buddy Ben, whom she lost touch with after high school. Will she win back her ex or was the right guy there all along? Get ready for all the cheese and a surprising amount of musical numbers, but overall this movie is really fun to watch.
I had to add Love Actually because between this and The Holiday (not currently streaming though), you can’t get through the holidays without watching them! Plus, this is actually one that your significant other will watch with you. I’m sure you’ve likely already seen it, but if not Love Actually is a romantic comedy that follows ten separate stories that interlink as the movie progresses. Just watch it – you’ll love it.
A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding
After enjoying the first, I obviously had to check out the sequel. The story picks up a year later when – spoiler alert – Amber is set to become Queen of Aldovia. Unfortunately, she’s stuck planning the wedding alone when the Aldovian economy is in crisis and the workers are on strike. Amber reverts back to her reporter past to investigate where the money is going and ruffles a few feathers in the process. While the movie is cute and quite original for the genre, it’s missing what is essential to cheesy Christmas movies – the romance. The soon to be King and Queen are hardly in a scene together until the wedding. But, if you loved the first and want to see how the story ends, it’s worth an hour and a half of your time.
Hard-partying socialite Ellen Langford gets talked into delivering an important letter to her uncle in small-town Snow Falls sans her credit cards. When her uncle has unexpectedly left town prior to her arrival, Ellen is forced to work for the inn she’s staying at to earn her stay until his return. She becomes close with the inn’s manager and learns the Christmas spirit of giving along the way. This movie is as sweet as sugar and completely heart-warming. My only hang-up is that the leading man is written as a tad dorky (for my personal preference) so the connection seems a bit far-fetched. When he said he was in art school and then shows his doodles, I about lost it! But somehow he grows on me and it works. You’re sure to have your heart warmed.
Business manager Kayla is in a failing relationship with her controlling choreographer fiance, but when she winds up under the mistletoe with a handsome stranger, something sparks and the two kiss. But things get tricky when he winds up as the caterer at her engagement party. I may have enjoyed this one in particular because I’ve been in the throws of Pretty Little Liars withdrawals and Noel Kahn is the leading man. It’s actually pretty confusing seeing him as the sweet love interest instead of trying to plot against the Liars, but hey! I’m here for it!
And one to watch because it’s terrible: Christmas Wedding Planner
Now I know that these movies aren’t known for their amazing acting or plots, but Christmas Wedding Planner really takes it to a new low. There is no chemistry between the main characters and the plot is absolutely ridiculous from start to finish. BUT, I need y’all to watch this so we can commiserate over it together 😉 PS… It even says “based on a Harlequin romance novel” in the opening credits! I should’ve known what I was in for!
Let me know in the comments if I missed your favorite!
