SHOP THE POST:
I have had a lot of questions recently about what products I use to do my makeup, so I wanted to do a quick roundup of my favorite beauty products and why I love them so much. I am completely ride or die when it comes to brands and products and use a mix of high and low end. When I find something that works, I stick with it. If you scroll to the bottom of this post, the final photo is an unedited snap of my face featuring all of these products so you can see the finished product.
First of all, let me preface this with my skin details. I have relatively dry skin. I actually get patches of psoriasis on my forehead and in my eyebrows (girls who have psoriasis, I feel your pain!!) Ironically, I also get cystic acne every so often and I’m amazed at how both can exist in such close quarters. But cystic acne only comes as one bump at a time and doesn’t make my skin oily. So oily-skinned girls – these products may not work as well for you.
For cleansing my skin, I only use Dove soap. Which I know sounds totally strange, but it works so well for me! I have found that if I use an acne wash, it really dries my skin out and then it overcompensates and I break out. Dove soap is moisturizing enough that I don’t get dry and flaky, but sensitive enough to prevent breakouts. My dermatologist suggested it and thank goodness! My skin has never looked better and I save money on products.
Depending on the last time I self tanned, I begin my makeup routine by applying one small pump of St. Tropez bronzing mousse to my face and neck using the tanning mitt. Self tanner tends to come off my face faster than it does on my body and I feel like the color really helps my complexion. Plus, it doesn’t get patchy when I apply my makeup over it. I usually let it air dry while I do my hair and then I begin my makeup routine.
I can honestly see a change in my skin in the mirror after applying this product. It immediately blurs my imperfections and smooths out my skin in preparation of my face makeup. Plus, it helps everything stay in place throughout the day.
Chanel CC Cream
I have never worn foundation and always opted for a BB or CC cream because I favor a no-makeup look. But after working outside for years in NASCAR, I noticed that my face makeup would almost rise off my skin as the day went on. I had a girlfriend whose skin always looked flawless at the track and she turned me on to Chanel CC Cream. This was a game changer.
Yes, it is a little pricey, but it is worth every penny. There are only three shades, but I wear the middle shade year round and it always matches my skin tone. It is more opaque than a traditional BB cream, so a little goes a long way. If I am just running out the door, I’ll throw on this and some mascara and be set! Plus, it has a strong SPF for extra protection. I wore this product as my only sunscreen during our honeymoon and never got burned once. Honestly, no one ever complimented my skin until I used this product.
Tarte Shape Tape Concealer
If you’re like me, you have tried a million concealers that just never did the trick. I don’t know what it is about concealer, but it is so dang tricky to find your perfect match! But I finally found everything I need in Tarte’s Shape Tape Concealer. It is long-lasting, super opaque, and won’t settle into lines. I use the shade Light and apply it with a damp beauty blender. It is a couple shades lighter than my skin tone, but I feel like it really brightens my under eye, forehead, and bridge of my nose. Plus, it is buildable depending on how dramatic a look I am going for.
Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder
After my concealer is in place, I set it with Laura Mercier Translucent Setting powder. This powder is white, but goes on clear. It even stood the flash photography test at my wedding! It just locks everything into place without anyone even noticing it is there and keeps you matte for hours. I’m tempted to scoop up the pressed version as well to keep in my purse for quick touch ups.
Kat Von D Shade + Light Palette
The Shade + Light Palette was suggested to me by a makeup artist after my endless complaints about not being able to contour correctly. As it turns out, I was using warm bronze shades when I needed to be using cool shades because they mimic a shadow. Rookie mistake!
Depending on how tan I am, I will mix the three contour shades and apply them in a 3-shape to my face (forehead along the hair line, below my cheek bone, and under my chin). I honestly don’t feel like myself anymore without contouring! The addiction is real.
An added bonus to this palette is that it is refillable so you can replace specific colors without having to shell out for a new palette every time.
Tarte Kind is the New Pretty Palette
This $29 set is such a steal considering all it includes! I use the bronzer to warm up my face after contouring. Using a large, fluffy brush I use round strokes to apply it to my forehead, slightly above my cheek contour, and down my neck and chest. I then use the blush and highlight to finish my look. The colors are seriously perfect for summer! At this point, I would buy anything Tarte sells. All of their recent products have been amazing!
Anastasia Brow Wiz
I don’t know how I filled in my eyebrows before Anastasia Brow Wiz! The small pencil is so precise and I love having the spoolie on the other side to smooth everything out. And there are SO many colors, so you can easily find your perfect match. I wear taupe!
Benefit Boi-ing Industrial Strength Concealer
After my face makeup is complete, I go in with Boi-ing concealer to touch up any imperfections before setting my entire face with translucent powder and a setting spray. As I mentioned, I have patches of psoriasis on my forehead. These aren’t typically raised off the skin, they are just red and this concealer covers them completely. It’s like my psoriasis, zits, dark spots, etc. are erased with Boi-ing! I even throw it in my purse to fix issues throughout the day.
Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette
I LOVE the warm pink, nudes, and browns of this eye shadow palette! The colors are just so blendable and easy to mix and match depending on what look you’re wanting to achieve. I use the left side of the palette for a more neutral, every day look, and the right side of the palette for a glam, going out look. And did I mention it smells like peaches?!
Loreal Infallible Gel Lacquer Liner
After applying eyeshadow, I draw a thin line right above my upper lashes with this gel liner. It glides on so smoothly and stays in place for days. Seriously, sometimes I’ll wash my face around my eyes and wear the liner for two days!
Loreal Infallible Never Fail Eyeliner
Aside from my eye shadow, I do my eye makeup entirely with drugstore products. And it isn’t necessarily to save money, they honestly just work the best. This eyeliner is just as dark and creamy as the kohl pencils from MAC, without the hassle of having to sharpen them. I apply it to my top and bottom waterline and smoke it out beneath my last line. My favorite part of this eyeliner is that it doesn’t smudge. With MAC’s pencils, black always traveled to the inner corner of my eye. But with Loreal, it stays put.
Loreal Voluminous Lash Primer
Here’s another game changer for y’all and a step I never miss in my makeup routine. I apply two coats of this white mascara to my eyelashes first, then let them dry before applying my black mascara. It makes them incredibly thicker and longer without looking chunky. I have even cut back on falsies since discovering this gem.
Loreal Telescopic Carbon Black Mascara
When it comes to my eyelashes, I love the look of separated fluffy full lashes and that is what I get with Loreal Telescopic Mascara. I have tried countless high-end mascaras and nothing does the trick. Thanks to the unique, skinny-shaped brush, I can really get in there and fully coat every lash. Plus, the shape is amazing for your lower lashes.
Tarte Double Duty Beauty Lip Sculptor
Run to your nearest Ulta and buy every one of these! Tarte Lip Sculptors are a gateway drug into lip stick for gloss lovers like myself. First of all, they don’t have that icky lipstick smell. They come in the most gorgeous high-pigment natural colors, they’re long-wearing, and they don’t smudge all over your face.
Basically, the formula is completely different than a normal lipstick, but SO MUCH better. If these couldn’t get any better, the matching lip gloss is on the other side. I am wearing the shade Kind is these photos, but will definitely be trying out the others soon.
